"Stuff" - where does it come from, and why do we want it so badly?

Over at storyofstuff.com, Annie Leonard has put together a great little 20 minute movie that takes us on a provocative tour of our consumer-driven culture, and calls us to live differently. Here's a short trailer:

Visit storyofstuff.com to see the whole film. I recommend downloading the movie in its entirety (here), and showing it to your family and friends. It's a great way to start conversations about how our choices have consequences, and how we can adopt a lifestyle that is honoring both to the planet God has entrusted to us, and to the other people who live on it.

This is such a great look into our society. It seems that we have become uneducated consumers! We just buy...no worries, no real attachement to the provider of the product (only the brand), and consume - in order to consume more.

We really are such selfish people...But there is hope! I believe there is a greater work bringing redemtion to all of this. And that brings me hope.

However, I think sometimes we really do think "what can I do?" I am convicted though about what I can do, and hopefully if we all start making small steps it will lead us towrads bigger change - together.

Thanks Jonathan for putting this out there!

About Thirst for Change

  • We're a couple of guys who work for Living Water International, a Christian organization that helps impoverished communities in the developing world acquire safe, clean water (video).

Because of the work we do, we get glimpses into lives and communities far from our own, which have changed the way we think about life and faith, and are transforming the way we see our place in the world. How can we love God and people authentically, both on our own streets and across the globe?

We don't have all the answers—in fact, we're just beginning to get a handle on the questions—but we want to invite you along on the journey.
